Your Cell Phone: Communications Device & Carrier Of Disease
In the quest for truth (and higher ratings) ABC’s Good Morning America decided to find
out what’s dirtiest - (a) the sole of your shoe, (b) a toilet seat, or (c) a cell phone you carry around in your pocket all the time.
Since it’s Good Morning America, I guessed (c), figuring that’s the most outrageous of the three choices. And of course, I was right.
The story is based on research out of the United Kingdom. It boils down to this: Between the heat of your pocket, and the heat the cell phone generates, you’ve got a high-powered incubator for germs there. Including staph germs that come from your hands and face, that can lead to anything from skin infections to (jeez!) meningitis.
Just for laughs, the scientists tested several cell phones belonging to Good Morning America crew members, and the sound man’s phone came back with between 10 and 50 million bacteria.
