T-Mobile USA Opens Its Wallet At FCC
The FCC’s auction of wireless spectrum space is the cellular phone business’ equivalent of selling oceanfront real estate. There’s only so much of it. And in the current auction, T-Mobile USA is opening its wallet the widest.
T-Mobile is the top bidder for wireless frequencies from New York to Hawaii, Puerto Rico to San Francisco. And for good reason: T-Mobile has just about the least amount of wireless space among the major cellular phone players.
With $437 million in bids so far, this may squelch some of the persistent rumors that T-Mobile’s parent Deutsche Telekom would be willing to sell T-Mobile to another carrier. (Not that it would never happen, just seems to be a little less likely.)
Interestingly, cable and satellite providers like Cablevision, DirecTV and Dish Network have also been involved in bidding; they may have dreams of offering wireless broadband or other add-ons that they can bundle with their established services.
