Regulating Cell Phone Use - On Buses?
While the use of mobile phones on airplanes is still a thorny issue, we hadn’t noticed anyone making a stink about the use of wireless phones on city buses.
Until now.
The Honolulu city council has decided that the use of cell phones on buses is distracting and dangerous. The council has unanimously passed Bill 71, which, according to reports, specifically outlaws the ”sound” of cell phones on city/county buses. In the same breath, the bill asks that phones be used “quietly” and gives bus drivers the authority to regulate phone use if necessary.
Council members reportedly said that if bus riders need to communicate wirelessly, let them send a text message.
Speculation: Those obnoxious Kelly Clarkson ring tones got out of hand.
It’ll be up to Honolulu mayor Mufi Hanneman to decide if Bill 71 becomes law.
