NYPD Blue-Tube: NY Mayor Wants Cell Phone Video For 911 Calls
Now that we have Enhanced 911 that taps into some cell phones’ ability to triangulate cell phone signals and locate people in trouble, what’s next?
Using your cell phones to take a bite out of crime, that’s what. Or better yet - shoot video of it.
New York City says it wants everyone with cell phones to be ready to shoot photos and video whenever they see crime. Cell phone cameras in New York have already been used to help catch “flashers” who exposed themselves in public. Now New York’s mayor Michael Bloomberg has announced 911 call centers will be equipped to handle digital images and video that can be sent from computers or directly from cell phones. The state of Indiana is apparently already working on developing a system, and is working with Centennial Wireless on engineering the technology.
What wasn’t mentioned is another logical extension of cell phone technology: sending pictures from the police, to the public. Imagine getting a picture message on your cell phone of the suspect in a kidnaping. It seems like the next logical step in the AMBER alert system pioneered by radio.
