Samsung

Starting with the YP-Q2 PMP, you’ll find both 8GB and 16GB variants with 50 hours of battery life, a 2.4-inch QVGA display, black and white color options, DNSe 3.0 sound enhancement technology, FM radio / recorder, a text viewer and a Smart Button that allows the user to designate a specific function for quick access. The YP-U5, on the other hand, was tailor made for gym rats; said audio stick sports a touchpad, 1-inch OLED display, USB connectivity, up to 20 hours of playback, an FM radio module and 2GB of internal storage. Check ‘em this April for $99.99 (8GB Q2), $129.99 (16GB Q2) and $39.99 (U5).

After a few days (or weeks?) of buzzing around, finally Samsung’s YP-Q2 PMP and YP-U5 are finally revealed. The portable media players are touching US soil by today. The Q2 is supposed to be bigger in everything than the U5. The earlier has bigger look (2.4 inch QVGA), a battery that can last up to 50 hours and also comes in two options of storage capacity; 8GB and 16GB. You can have it in 2 colors options; white and black and sports other goodies such as FM radio and recorder, quick access buttons called Smart Buttons and a sound enhancement technology called DNS3 3.0.

The smaller one, the YP-U5, is smaller in size, looks and also memory capacity. It only has an internal memory of 2GB, a touch pad audio stick, USB ports for connection and also FM radio. The battery can last to 20 hours.

So, enjoy the new toys, until the next round of players come out after you’ve shelled out your heard earned greenbacks.

Samsung A877 with AMOLED touchscreen

A877 Portrait

A877 Portrait

A877 qwerty

A877 qwerty

From engadget: Rumor has it that we’re looking at the Samsung A877 here, delivering some 3.2 inches of AMOLED glory at WQVGA resolution, a 3 megapixel cam with geotagging support, TouchWiz (naturally), GPS, HSDPA, and a landscape slide-out full QWERTY keyboard.

Phonedog.com has this tidbit:

3.2″ WQVGA AMOLED touchscreen
Slide-out QWERTY and messaging shortcut button
3 MP camera with geotagging
Telenav GPS Navigator
Full HTML browser
TouchWiz user interface
Quadband EDGE/GSM
Dual band HSDPA (1900 and 850)
Bluetooth, MP3 player

Not too shabby for a non smartphone. The AMOLED displays Samsung was showing off on the Omnia HD at Mobile World Congress were impressive, really bright and crisp, and the A877 seems to boast the same type of screen.

The specs look great, and if they bear out, this would be a nice “make-good“ for the flop that was the AT&T Quickfire. Quickfire, another touchscreen/QWERTY messaging phone, was recently pulled from AT&T shelves because of problems with the charger overheating.

Thanks to the “Deep Throat” who sent this in. Bear in mind that this tipster has no track record with us, but the pics and specs sure look pretty good, no?

EDITED TO INCLUDE:
Aaron’s earlier post, mentioning a “Jackfrost” model coming out on AT&T on the 29th, might lead one to believe that the A877 is indeed this unnamed phone. Says Aaron: “I think it’s certainly solid enough that we could make the prediction.”

Alright, no secret video so far or other techs or specs. Great looking phone and if the A827 gives us any idea, with being a TV phone, this is sure to please.

pluginspage=”http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash”>

Aside from the 480 x 320-res projector that uses Texas Instruments’ DLP tech, the Show also has a fine-looking 3.2-inch, 400 x 240 OLED touch screen, 5MP camera with LED flash, and Samsung’s widget-based touch OS. It’s dropping in South Korea soon, but there’s of course no news on a US release.

BlackJack II: Not A Game But A Phone

Friday, October 19th, 2007

A couple of days ago, Samsung (working with AT&T) announced to the mobile phone industry one of the newest mobile phone units in their line up. This new unit is known as the BlackJack II and it has been created as a smart phone.

The BlackJack II comes using Windows as its operating system and if you are its user, you can do live video calls to other users who have AT&T lines and compatible phone units.

Why BlackJack II? Well, of course, there is a BlackJack and it is the descendant of the BlackJack II. BlackJack was a top seller and it was also a smart phone. Now like its descendant, the BlackJack II is also a cameraphone and a full keyboard so you can type as if on an ordinary computer keyboard.

Compared to the BlackJack, the BlackJack II has a slimmer battery which also has an improved life.

Meet The Designer Phone Serenata

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

If you love designer mobile phones, then you may want to try take a look at the product of the joint project of Samsung and Bang & Olufsen. The new mobile phone is called the Serenata and some say that it looks like an iPod.

Anyhow, one of the major features of this mobile phone is its speaker which is just so good at projecting sound that you’d feel like the sound doesn’t even come from the phone itself. Bang & Olufsen is saying that such speakers (integrated into the mobile phone itself) are capable of “delivering distortion-free? sound.

The scroll wheel is what draws people to say that the phone looks like an inverted iPod. But the gadget also has a keyboard on the screen itself which now reminds me of the iPhone.

If you’ve gone tired of listening to the blasting music, then you can just plug in your headphones and enjoy the crisp and clear sounds from the phone. You can also plug the gadget right to your stereo if you’d like to.

Fertility Mobile Phone Patent Filed By Samsung

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

We have already tackled about a fertility mobile phone. Now one of the most recent piece of news that I have come across is that Samsung is now trying to get a patent for such a mobile phone.

This Samsung fertility mobile gadget would not only allow you to send SMS or take calls or maybe even take pictures. According to the company, this one would be able to take the basal body temperature of a woman and it would do the measurements and inform the user when she would be fertile.

Of course you may want to understand a little on how the gadget could tell if a woman is fertile or not. Here’s a little piece of Samsung’s documentation as published by IntoMobile:

…when the woman’s menstruation period is set between 28 to 30 days, the days may be divided into a low temperature period and a high temperature period, based on the ovulation day. In this instance, the low temperature day indicates around about 14 days from a first day of menstruation to the ovulation day. During the low temperature period, the woman’s temperature falls and the endometrium gets thicker due to acts of ovarian follicle hormones to be ready to receive a fertilized egg. A body temperature may significantly fall for a certain period before changing from the low temperature period to the high temperature period. The woman ovulates at any time between the certain period and two or three days before the high temperature period. The ovarian follicle after the ovulation becomes corpus luteum and LH is produced, which makes the endometrium softer so that an egg may be easily implanted. During this period, the body temperature rises… the fertile period may correspond to 7 days before the ovulation day and 4 days after the ovulation day.

Hmmm… Mighty interesting.

Bring Disney’s Magic With You

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

As a kid, you have loved everything about Disney. And even as an adult, Disney’s lure never fails to attract you. Now, you can start bringing Disney’s magic with you - through mobile phones.

It’s not simply a service where you can download Disney characters’ images. It’s more of a Disney mobile phone and Samsung has been behind the creation of such. Two new mobile phones are now available in the market and you’ll get more Disney from the Disney Mobile services.

There’s the Samsung DM-S105 and it comes in silver. There’s also the DM-S110 which is pink in color. They come in clamshell designs and they also feature a VGA camera, Bluetooth capability, and a speakerphone so you can still make use of the phone even while driving.

I did notice though that these two new mobile phones seem to have been made for kids. I mean, just take a look at the design. Plus, I also did learn that if you buy any of these mobile phones and give them to your kids, you can actually monitor just how much are they spending on sending SMS or talking, and where your child is at the present moment (given that the mobile phone is always with your kid).

Nokia Still No. 1

Friday, August 10th, 2007

It does look like Nokia is on a roll. According to the most recently report about the industry, Nokia still owns the greatest amount of share in the whole market. The report which was released last Thursday talked about just how much Nokia was able to hold firmly to the number one spot with a market share of 37%.

Motorola which used to own the 2nd spot now moved lower and would now have to live with being in the third place. It is Samsung who moved upwards and took over the second spot. Motorola was able to achieve 13% while Samsung took on 13.7%.

Coming in at the fourth spot is Sony Ericsson who holds 9.1% and LG Electronics finds 7% and takes on the 5th rank.

These mobile phone makers’ industry shares are moving quite unpredictably and we sure would like to know next time who’s going to be ranking first and who’s going down to the very last.

Is There Going To Be A Giorgio Armani Mobile Phone?

Monday, July 30th, 2007

There seems to be quite a number of designer mobile phones already in the market. You know, just like the one from Levi’s and that one from Tag Heuer. And right along that line, a new mobile phone may be coming soon.

This time, the new mobile phone is going to be the product of the collaboration of Giorgio Armani and Samsung. Although such a plan is still being decided on if it would continue, a spokesperson for the mobile phone maker did say, “We are currently reviewing the possibility with various firms including Armani. We will make an official announcement once it is finalised.?

Now, some rumors in the mobile phone industry are circulating about the new Samsung-Armani gadget. It has been said that if it does become reality, it “will come with exclusive content and a unique user interface?. So now I’m thinking. How exclusive is exclusive and how unique would be unique?

Your Mobile Phone Tells People That You Are…

Friday, April 6th, 2007

…stylish? Fun? Sporty?

You see, according to a research study done by the Nielsen Media Research, your mobile phone choice actually has got a lot to say about you. And Jody Loughlin, the associate director of Nielsen, does continue to explain that “all makes of mobile phone had a wide spread of customer types, but some customers were more attracted to certain brands than others.?

Loughlin also does continue, “It’s clear that many Australians chose a phone that says something about them, and that the type of mobile you’re seen with could even be more important than whether you’re with Telstra, Optus, Vodafone or one of the other major carriers.?

And as Nielsen does some categorizing and classifications, here is the list of the top five mobile phone brands and what they tell about its owner:

  • Nokia - the choice of family-minded, middle aged managers
  • Motorola - favored by fashion conscious under 24s
  • Sony Ericsson - for ambitious young men trying to make their mark
  • LG - favored by moms
  • Samsung - for young women focused on their career
