California About To Go “Hands Free?”
Only a girlie-man would use a cell phone while driving without a hands-free device. Right, Arnold?
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is expected to sign legislation that will unite California with states such as New York, New Jersey and Connecticut in outlawing the use of cell phones while driving, without a hands free device. Violating the law is a $20 ticket for the first offense, $50 for subsequent violations.
It took six years to get this bill through California’s legislature, against opposition from cellular service providers, among others. In a state where driving is about equal to breathing on the priority list, thousands of motorists will be seeking hands-free solutions to keep them connected on the road. The good news is, the law won’t actually go into effect until July of 2008, and by then, 4 out of 10 new cars will have embedded cell phone technology.
